Junior Kuppanna Restaurant - Sri Lanka

I have visited Junior Kuppanna, Bambalapitiya many times, and overall it’s a good place with tasty, authentic South Indian food. The flavours are consistent, portion sizes are good, and it’s worth the money. The staff are friendly and provide good customer service. However, the interior furniture could be improved, as some seating feels uncomfortable. Also, the hand-washing area was not very clean or neat during my last visit, which can definitely be improved. With a few improvements to the interior and cleanliness, this would be an even better dining experience.

The restaurant is situated in an ideal location. The manager Mr ramesh is a gem of a person with excellent service. Talking about the food, I would say it s as authentic as it gets. The food was so soothing, and the serving method which is on a banana leaf was great. My personal favorite was chicken biriyani and chicken bites provided for starters. What an experience. The ambiance with the lightings and music was so lovely too. I would defenitly come again.

We decided to ignore the negative chatter on reviews and make our inaugural Sri Lankan Indian food outing here, and it spectacularly proved all the doubts wrong. Nestled at the end of Station Road in Bambalapitiya, it's a breeze to find, with plenty of parking available right outside or at a nearby private parking lot. The restaurant instantly transports you with its vibrant and genuine Indian vibe. We were greeted with fast, warm service from a lovely server whose attentiveness truly elevated our experience. We loved eating off a banan leaf- first timer for my 10 year old son. As for the food? Absolute fantastic. Even for my family who usually shies away from intense heat, each dish was a triumph of flavor and balance —especially the incredible, crispy dosas. It’s the kind of meal that leaves you feeling utterly content, convinced you’ve gotten far more than your money’s worth. Do not miss this gem.

Junior Kuppanna is a fantastic destination for authentic South Indian, especially Chettinad-style cuisine. From the moment you step in, you’re greeted by rich aromas and a menu filled with bold, traditional flavors that truly stand out. The non vegetarian dishes are the real highlight. Signature items like the mutton curry, chicken Chettinad, and pepper based gravies are cooked to perfection. Spicy, flavorful, and deeply satisfying without being overpowering. The meats are tender, well-marinated, and clearly prepared using quality ingredients. Portions are generous and ideal for sharing. Orders do take a little time to prepare, but the wait is absolutely worth it as everything is freshly cooked and incredibly delicious. The accompaniments such as rice, dosa, parotta, and biryani pair perfectly with the gravies, making the meal wholesome and satisfying. Service is courteous and efficient, with staff happy to guide you based on your spice preference. The ambience is clean and comfortable, making it suitable for family dining as well as casual meals with friends.

The flavors were really nice and the food tasted authentic. The only disappointment was that the biryani we got was cold,it wasn’t served hot, which took away from the experience a bit. Aside from that, the portions were good, and the staff were friendly and quick to serve. With a little more attention to temperature, it would’ve been perfect. I’d still go back because the taste was great overall.

We tried two different varieties of biriyani along with a garlic chicken dish. The biriyani was superb—well prepared, flavorful, and highly enjoyable. However, the garlic chicken was not to my personal preference. Overall, the dining experience was worth the cost. The total expense for my husband and me, including beverages, was approximately Rs. 7,500, and the waiting time for the food was around 15 minutes. We have visited this restaurant previously and tried several other dishes, all of which were good. Based on our experiences, I would confidently recommend this restaurant, especially for its biriyani selections.

The outdoor seating area, at sunset, with the breeze coming in, munching on Bajji’s and Filter coffee is a feeling everyone that has eaten here know too well. Tried the Pani Puri as well, FOR ONCE someone that makes it spicy, tangy and refreshing, 10/10 MUST TRY: Pani Puri, Medhu Vada, Andhra Punugulu, Molaga Bajji, Vazhaikai Bajji, Masala Chai and Filter Coffee just for the davara set.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Delicious biryani with rich flavors and authentic taste. The side dishes were a perfect match, and the banana leaf serving added a nice traditional touch. Special thanks to Julan, our waiter, who was very friendly and made the experience even better!
